BEHIND THE MAGIC Part 1: Excellence #1

We're closing out the first week of the EXCELLENCE DELUXE HARDCOVER with $47,799 raised from 658 backers wouldwide, and the first stretch goals unlocked with more on the way!

To celebrate each week of the campaign, we’re going to take you BEHIND THE MAGIC of this incredible graphic novel and show you how some of the most iconic scenes came together. Today we’re focusing on one of the most powerful scenes from Excellence #1, and writer/co-creator Brandon Thomas exclusively shared a few words with us to explain what it meant to him.

“Wanted to start this feature off with one of the most mentioned, referenced, and celebrated scenes that we've ever done. The character of GG is the most direct portrayal of any character in the entire book, she IS my late grandmother on every level--she talks like her, she thinks like her, and she cut my hair like her. There is a version of her in every creator-owned comic I've ever done, who lovingly referred to my comics as ‘funny books’. I think she'd get a real kick outta this scene, and that she gets to float in it, and appears much, much taller than she was in real life.”

And artist/co-creator Khary Randolph explained that this is a very personal scene for him, too.

“GG is an amalgamation of my two grandmothers--one of whom owned a hair salon, and the other that spent her last few years in a nursing home due to a combination of a stroke and Alzheimer's. They are both two of the toughest, bravest, most amazing women I've ever known. Because of all this, she means quite a bit to me and every scene featuring her is bittersweet.”

Everyone came through big yesterday, with $37,824 raised from 518 backers, and we are about to unlock some incredible stretch goals. But this is only the beginning of the awesome EXCELLENCE updates we’ll have for you over the next month.

Today we’re bringing you a look at all the awesome variant covers for the first four issues of EXCELLENCE, all collected in this deluxe hardcover that you’ve backed – and if you haven’t done it yet, you don’t wanna miss out on those super rare tiers that are disappearing!

FUNDED! EXCELLENCE BOOK ONE DELUXE HARDCOVER beats its goal!

We did it! Thank you so much to everyone who has backed the project so far. Because of your support, we were able to fully fund this project in less than 36 hours! That’s an incredible achievement, and it’s all because of you!

But we’re not done yet! We said we want to make this book the coolest, most deluxe hardcover it can be, so we’re not stopping here. With this $40,000 of initial funding, we’re adding an embossed logo and upgrading to a more tactile-friendly logo to grace the cover of every book!

Our next stretch goal is at $50,000, adding a metallic logo and metallic accents on the cover and spine for a shiny, magical look.

Pleasure continue to share and support this Kickstarter, and help us make EXCELLENCE the book it was always meant to be. Because, don’t forget – Excellence is Real.
